How To Remove Oxidation From Hardi Board Siding

How To Remove Oxidation From Hardi Board Siding

Welcome back to the Lean and Mean Academy! Today, we’re in Auburn, Alabama, working on a Hardy plank home that has seen better days. The siding is severely oxidized, and recent hail damage has left it looking rough. Our mission? Restore the siding using Ox-Knox and show you how to tackle oxidation the right way.

Step 1: Assessing the Oxidation

Before applying any chemicals, always check the level of oxidation. In this case, just a simple wipe test showed heavy oxidation buildup. If you can see the chalky residue easily, you’re dealing with a significant oxidation issue that needs attention.

Step 2: Choosing the Right Mix

For this job, we’re using Ox-Knox at a 4:1 ratio. You can also X-Jet it for a similar dilution strength, but we prefer using a pump-up sprayer for precise application. The key is to play around with ratios and dwell time to find what works best for your specific job.

Important Note for Painters

If the oxidation is light and the paint underneath is still in good shape, a restoration with Ox-Knox can save the homeowner from needing a full repaint. However, if the paint is failing, removing oxidation is a must before repainting. Instead of spending hours scrubbing with TSP, try Ox-Knox for a faster, brushless solution.

Step 3: Application & Dwell Time

  1. Pre-wet the siding – This helps prevent streaking.

  2. Apply Ox-Knox evenly – Use a pump sprayer for better coverage.

  3. Let it dwell for about 5 minutes – Avoid letting it dry completely.

  4. Rinse thoroughly with a ball valve – No scrubbing needed if done correctly.

The Results: A Drastic Transformation

After applying Ox-Knox and rinsing, the siding looked brand new. The oxidation was completely removed, revealing clean, refreshed paint underneath.

Key Takeaways

  • Always test a small area first to see how the surface reacts.

  • Play around with dilution ratios and dwell times for the best results.

  • If the paint is in good condition, restoration can extend its lifespan.

  • Painters can use this method to prepare for repainting with minimal effort.
