3 Mistakes To Avoid With Your Pressure Washing Equipment

...

Building a pressure washing setup can be an exciting venture, but it’s easy to make costly mistakes along the way. Whether you're just starting out or looking to upgrade, understanding where to invest and where to save can make all the difference in your business’s success.

In this post, we’re diving into three major mistakes that many make when assembling their pressure washing trailers, with the goal of saving you thousands of dollars. Ready to avoid these pitfalls? Let’s get started!

1. Overspending on Equipment Before Proving the Business Concept

One of the biggest mistakes we see is new entrepreneurs spending too much money upfront without a proven business model. It’s tempting to buy top-of-the-line equipment right out of the gate, but without a solid customer base, this can be a risky move.

For example, many people go straight for high-end 5.5 to 8 GPM pressure washers, which can be costly. However, when starting out, a more affordable option like a 3.2 GPM Simpson washer from Lowe’s or Home Depot can get the job done effectively. We used one of these for our first year and a half, and it worked like a charm!

The key is to limit your liability at the start. Focus on getting customers and perfecting your service before making big investments in equipment.

2. Choosing the Wrong Building Materials

When building your trailer or skid, the materials you choose are crucial. Our first trailer build was not the best, but we learned from our mistakes. The key takeaway? Aluminum is your friend.

Aluminum holds up well against chemicals, making it the ideal material for your trailer or skid. While it may be more expensive upfront, it will save you money in the long run by avoiding damage and corrosion. If you’re serious about your soft-wash business, investing in an all-aluminum trailer is a smart choice.

3. Misallocating Funds—Invest Where It Counts

When it comes to spending money on your setup, it’s essential to prioritize. Sure, it’s nice to have all the shiny bells and whistles, but are they necessary?

For instance, instead of spending on things like ball valve swivels, invest in marketing. A $40 swivel might look cool on your hose, but that same $40 could be used for a Google or Facebook ad that could bring in new business. The goal is to grow your business, not just your equipment collection.
